Preserving Historic Corridors in Open Office Plans

چکیده
One of the last 1920's skyscrapers built in Philadephia, the FidelityPhiladelphia Trust Building, with its fine Beaux-Arts design and ornamentation, is individually listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Designed by the local architectural firm of Simon and Simon, the Fidelity Building, as it is called today, synthesizes classical architectural features and standard practices of skyscraper Jesign. The steel frame, limestoneclad structure rises 29 stores in an H-shaped plan, with offices on the upper stories and a grand 3-story bank room on the ground floor. The double-loaded corridor on each of the office floors, which forms the cross-bar of the H-shaped plan, is a significant feature of the interior, and these corridors are important surviving elements of the historic office plan (see figure 1). While various offices have been altered over time, the corridors retain a high degree of architectural integrity; their historic appearance and materials, including original light fixtures, marble floors and marble wainscoting, paneled doors, and wooden trim, have all survived largely intact. Corridors increase plant species richness at large scales.
Habitat fragmentation is one of the largest threats to biodiversity. Landscape corridors, which are hypothesized to reduce the negative consequences of fragmentation, have become common features of ecological management plans worldwide. Despite their popularity, there is little evidence documenting the effectiveness of corridors in preserving biodiversity at large scales. Using a large-scale re...

When developing plans to protect populations of species at risk, we tend to focus on protecting and preserving habitat where the species naturally occurs. Ecologists employ historic sightings of individuals, habitat suitability index (HSI) models, and the expert advice of local naturalists familiar with the environments desired and required. In many cases, the optimal habitats are fragmented to...

متن کاملReconciling History with Modernity: 1940s Plans for Durham and Warwick
During the 1940s a series of remarkable and radical planning documents were produced for many British cities, generally now collectively referred to as ‘reconstruction plans’. Universally these sought to introduce a highly interventionist, comprehensive planning, often with strong elements of ‘clean sweep’ reconstruction. This article considers two such plans, for the historic cities of Durham ...
